Meet Daan, Welder
Find out how, after four years, Daan found a new challenge completely tailored to his needs.
Daan graduated as a welder and wants to devote his professional career entirely to that profession. About four years ago, he ended up at IMPACT through an online application. After several years at Teksam, he needed a new challenge to expand his knowledge. He found it at Heylen Metaalwerken, where he works daily as a welder on furniture, stairs … for your interior.
Daan loves to work with his hands. So the fact that he studied for a stile as a welder should come as no surprise. “Welding is without a doubt my passion. It is a profession in which I really want to build a great career and keep getting better. So as soon as I got out of school, I was logically looking in that direction and already gained my first experience before I applied online and ended up at IMPACT.”
From serial work to custom interiors
That application was successful: his first challenge through IMPACT found Daan at Teksam. “I mainly did serial work there: that means you have to weld x number of pieces of a certain material in the same way. It’s something you have to be for, what you have to like to do. At the beginning of my career, it was definitely a good learning opportunity that allows you to build a solid foundation. But I myself want to learn constantly, which is more difficult when you know everything by heart after a while. That’s why after four years I decided it was time to look for something else.”
And so Daan teamed up with IMPACT to search again. The question? A job with a lot of variety and work in daytime stations. They found it at Heylen Metaalwerken. “It is a completely different interpretation of the job as a welder with a different target audience. There is a lot more customization involved: if it doesn’t fit, you are in trouble. And the eye wants something too: you make furniture, stairs and handrails that end up in someone’s interior. In short: it has to look bang on every time.”
Always keep learning
Daan is extremely satisfied with his current job. “I love it: it’s exactly the variety I was looking for. Every day is different, so I’m constantly learning new things. I’m not the person who wants to stand at the same machine and do the same job for years. So much is constantly changing in our field: new techniques, new machines, new abrasives, new welding equipment … That’s what makes it so fascinating. You also learn that way to do things differently, faster, prettier … again.”
The fact that as a temporary worker you can switch to a new job without much hassle is, in Daan’s opinion, one of the big plus points. “Sometimes you hear that working as a temp doesn’t offer you job security, but in my opinion, with a permanent job you don’t have that either. Moreover, you force yourself the chance of a permanent contract if you perform well. On the other hand, as a temp, you are not stuck with long contracts or notice periods, so the ball is in your court. If a job is disappointing or you are ready for a new challenge, you can look for something else in the meantime and start there quickly.”
Finding work quickly? No problem!
Daan also has nothing but positive words about the cooperation with IMPACT. “Every contact runs in a very friendly and positive manner. They really are people who go all the way and do their utmost to meet your expectations and requirements. If you want work at short notice, they support you very well in that and also find something suitable for you. Of course, you have to dare to take a new step yourself and not just say no to everything right away: you shouldn’t expect the impossible.”
But for now, then, Daan is more than comfortable. “I am grateful that together with IMPACT I found a job that I love so much in a fast way. It is without a doubt my intention to grow further in this job in the coming years. Just because every day brings something new and change is a constant here, I can still learn an enormous amount here. And if there ever comes a time when I do look for a new challenge, I know I only have to knock on IMPACT’s door.”
